First crossing installed at Crescent Primary School
London, UK – January 18th, 2018 – Leading national road surfacing contractor THB announced today that it will be installing the UK’s first Safe Steps for School™ road crossing in Croydon, tomorrow evening (19/01/2018) at 7pm.
The Safe Steps for School™ programme aims to encourage children and parents to use road crossings provided during school pick-up and drop-off times. The Safe Steps for School™ road crossing includes Thermoplastic “footprints” that guide Children to and from the school and the road crossing. The road crossing comprises a striking, brightly coloureddesign; laid using market-leading durable, safe Preformed road markings.
After statistics from the Department for Transport show the number of child deaths at all crossings increased from one to seven in the years 2015 to 2016; Croydon Council said they were thrilled to be the first Local Authority in the UK to trial the nationwide initiative.
Councillor Stuart King, cabinet member for transport and environment, added: “The Safe Steps for School footprints design will be a fantastic tool to promote and educate children oncrossing the road safely. I’m delighted Croydon is the first place to trial this new programme and hope the eye-catching design encourages both parents and children to cross at a safe place, reducing the risk of road accidents.”
Peter Whitmore, MD at THB said “The idea was born from one of our own employees here at THB, after witnessing the lack of care given by parents crossing the road with their children at their child’s primary school. THB are already a proud Surfacing partner to various Local Authorities and have installed bespoke road crossings across the UK. It pleases me to know this new initiative will improve the safety of school Children on the roads.”
The Safe Steps for School™ programme is to be rolled out nationally in 2018 and improve Road Safety for Primary School Children across the UK. The crossing “Eye Eye Ivy“ design was kindly donated by famed global design house Eley-Kishimoto / dolman-bowles.
